The world evoked by Sue Roe in The Private Lives of the Impressionists - sunny, beachy and wine-soaked - sounds like a lot of fun, says Kathryn Hughes. The Impressionists transformed our way of looking at art, even our view of nature; their sudden brilliance made much of the painting that came before them seem dull and uninspired. This compelling book is a tribute to this extraordinary movement and the energy and originality of the painters who created it.

Before impressionism, landscapes in art were often imaginary, perfect landscapes painted in the studio. The impressionists changed all that. They painted outdoors. As they were outside, they looked at how light and colour changed the scenes. They often painted thickly . Post-Impressionism, in Western painting, movement in France that represented both an extension of Impressionism and a rejection of that style’s inherent limitations. The term Post-Impressionism was coined by the English art critic Roger Fry for the work of such late 19th-century painters as Paul Cézanne, Georges Seurat, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and others.

This book should lead to a new evaluation of sculpture and decorative arts in Gauguin's work, and to a new understanding of the artist's place within the Impressionist movement. Scholars will find special interest in the new assessment of the importance of the Impressionist Pisarro and of art collecting for Gauguin. Impressionism can be considered the first distinctly modern movement in painting. Developing in Paris in the s, its influence spread throughout Europe and eventually the United States. Its originators were artists who rejected the official, government-sanctioned exhibitions, or salons, and were consequently shunned by powerful academic art.

Impressionism was developed by Claude Monet and other Paris-based artists from the early s. (Though the process of painting on the spot can be said to have been pioneered in Britain by John Constable in around –17 through his desire to paint nature in a realistic way).

Instead of painting in a studio, the impressionists found that they could capture the momentary and transient.
